Three days ago Google presented their communication app "Wave" to developers. Wave looks good, I think I like it and apparently it is open source - don't know how much of it exactly... I'm thinking though - I don't want to put even more of my stuff on Google's servers, - not to mention all of my private and business communication, documents etc... If I could run Wave on my own server that would be something...

City of Sound and Russel Davies are gathering photos for their Best Urban Spaces and Places project:

... We're using a Flickr group, so you join that and then send appropriate photos of great urban spaces or places to the group. (Once you've joined our group, use the 'Send to group' function above your photo. If you don't have a Flickr account, you can sign up for free.) Once we've a suitably rich set, we'll filter it down, and publish the best in a free downloadable pamphlet form, with a more stylish printed offering for sale (though free to successful contributors).

For the purposes of this project, I'm not overly worried about the knotty definitions of 'place' or 'space' - or even how you choose to interpret 'best' (the academic within will worry over that, but really, you shouldn't). It'll just be interesting to see what emerges. And I'm also aware that a photo-centric project will not allow much in the way of sound or other sensory information, or memory, but it'll do. Yahoo's maps integration is so clunky that it's not going to be worth fully exploiting that layer, at least initially, but we do ask that you use photo's caption area to describe the place a bit. That would be both useful and informative.

The places and spaces don't all have to have the perceived gravitas of a Piazza San Marco or a Greenwich Village, either. It could simply be a bench, a garden, a market, a tram stop, a library ... it's your call.

Der serbische Schriftsteller Bora Cosic lebt seit 15 Jahren im Exil. Aus Protest gegen die Kriegspolitik des damaligen Machthabers Slobodan Miloševic hatte er Belgrad 1992 verlassen. In Serbien nahm damals kaum jemand von seinem Weggang Kenntnis, obwohl Bora Cosic als einer der wichtigsten serbischen Schriftsteller gilt.

Von Berlin aus beobachtet der heute 75-Jährige mit Verwunderung, wie die ehemaligen jugoslawischen Republiken in Richtung EU drängen.

CUE – THE INSTITUTE OF CONTEMPORARY URBAN ENCOUNTERS - Was ist das?

CUE ist ein Projekt, das im Jahr 1999 von mir angedacht und im folgenden Jahr mit Sarah Huber, Michael Pfister, Lorenz "Lopetz" Gianfreda, Stefan Wolf und Uwe Wittwer initiiert wurde. Vor ca. 4 Jahren, stiess Walter Mueller mit Sitz in Belgrad als sogenanntes "Ostbüro" dazu.

Die Idee des CUE Institutes basiert auf folgender Beobachtung: Klubkultur und Musik sind Elemente, die Menschen unterschiedlichster Generationen und Professionen zu berühren und zu inspirieren vermögen. Als Veranstalter, DJ, und Künstlerassistent, befand ich mich in idealer Position, solche Feststellungen immer wieder zu machen.
Zudem trieb mich eine grosse Liebe zum urbanen Raum, – eine Liebe die als Antithese zu meiner gewohnten kleinstädtischen Umgebung diente.

Über lange Zeit, war der Leitsatz von CUE:
CUE ist eine Institution, die zum Zweck hat, Menschen mit einem gemeinsamen Stil oder ästhetischen Verständnis zu kreativer Arbeit an einem bestimmten Thema zusammen zu bringen. Das Thema ist der „Urbane Raum“ und der gemeinsame Nenner ist das Verständnis von Klubkultur als Zentrum urbaner Kultur.

CUE entstand aus dem Kontext der Klub - oder Dancefloorkultur -, mit dem Anspruch, eine Welt von Musik, Bildender Kunst, Design, Architektur und Performance in ein Kunstprojekt mit sozio-kulturellem Überbau zu packen, und dieses in eigenen Räumlichkeiten in Form eines Institutes der Welt zu präsentieren. Der ursprüngliche Wunsch war, als Institut in mehreren Städten präsent zu sein, um Austauschprojekte zu ermöglichen und Forschung zu betreiben, die den Bogen von Soziologie bis Kunst spannen sollte. Warum denn so bescheiden...

Mit dem Ende der von CUE geführten Klubserie "Echo Club" Mitte 2004, mit fortschreitender Zeit und den Schwierigkeiten, grössere Geldmittel zu akquirieren, änderte sich die Ausrichtung von CUE. Aufgrund dieser Entwicklung und einer eingehenden Diskussion an einem gemeinsamen Workshop in Belgrad, entstand Ende 2005 ein neuer Leitsatz:

Das CUE Institut befasst sich mit Themen der Kunst sowie der urbanen Gesellschaft und setzt sich zum Ziel, das Zusammenspiel dieser Elemente zu fördern und zu erforschen.

Durch die offenere Formulierung unseres Leitsatzes, zeigt sich ein stärkerer Realitätsbezug und durch das Weglassen der Klubkultur eine Neuausrichtung, die CUE stärker als zuvor in einen Kunstkontext stellt.

BBC's Heather Payton speaks to thirty year old artist Zena, who's lived in Beirut for the last twelve years, to ask her how her home has changed over the last few weeks.

On friday I was listening to the BBC World Service programme called «Outlook», where the presenter spoke with an artist living in Beirut. It was very interesting, as she spoke about the daily routines in a city not so different from ours, that have been made impossible by the war. Things like going for a weekly cancer treatment or printing work papers... I hadn't really thought about this aspect of war, yet it is what is the most touching because it is stuff we do day in day out, taking it for granted – and we already freak out if we don't have network coverage for our mobile phones for a minute or two. It is easier to look away, when the media coverage presents victims covered in blood and homes get bombed.
